When it comes to nail technician qualifications within the UK, they don’t get more popular than the NVQ. With four levels to train to, NVQs are ideal for giving you both practical training and for teaching you everything you need to know about the industry. They are not the only qualifications available, but typically they are one of the best and most recognised throughout the country.

Who Creates NVQs?

The courses for each NVQ level are designed by people who have worked within the industry and who know a lot about it. They know all about the services that clients want, the potential health and safety problems that can occur and both the simple and the advanced treatments that are available. They have put together standards that need to be followed which will ensure that you have the minimum amount of knowledge needed to provide the best service to the public.

Are NVQs Really the Best Qualifications?

The main reason why NVQs are known to be the best type of qualifications is because they do teach you everything that you need to know. They don’t just sit you in a classroom and talk to you about treatments and customer service – they actually allow you to learn practically too. The only way you can truly learn something is by doing it yourself and NVQs give you the chance to do that.

You will find that in order to start work within a nail salon you will need to be trained to at least NVQ level one or the equivalent of it. It is possible that a company will hire you based on the condition that you train for your level one NVQ whilst you are working for them. However, generally it would be a good idea to gain the NVQ level one qualification before you apply. It will basically teach you everything you need to be an assistant in a nail salon. Basic consultations, simple treatments and help with preparation will all be covered in this basic starter course.

Once you have gained your NVQ level one, you then have the option to move on to the level two qualification. This is advisable as it teaches you how to perform treatments on your own. Obviously if you want to be a nail technician you will need to be able to work unsupervised. So gaining at least a level two is a good idea.

Level three is something that only advanced nail technicians need to worry about. It will train you to supervisor status and teach you more in depth methods and better customer service skills.

Overall NVQs will teach you everything you need to know to get into the nail industry. Training to at least level two is advised. It is worth knowing that new treatments and techniques are constantly being introduced and so further training and education within the industry will always be expected from you.
